Active ImageOn September 29th the 1-6 grade students were honored for their participation in the 2008 Summer Reading Program from May 30-September 5.  The summer reading program challenges 1-6 grade students to keep track of their pages read over the summer on a reading log. Each grade was given a goal of how many pages to read and the rest was up to the students to follow through. As a result of their diligence, the students read 129,423 pages!!!!!! We had 70 participants with 54 students meeting their goal. All students that participated received a certificate of participation with a free kids meal to the Red Robin Restaurant Active Imageand a free frosty from Wendy’s. Those students that met their goal received an additional free Friendly’s kid’s meal and a $5.00 gift card to Barnes and Noble. We also recognized 7 students that read the most pages in their grade. Those students were Aaliyah Pennie, Collin Nasso, Corban VanOrnum, Victoria Davis, Nathan Cannon, Jasmine Moussa and Morgan Van Ornum.
When we kicked off our Summer Reading Program we told students some of the teachers would ride their bikes a certain distance based on how many pages the students read. The formula was based on this: 1 average book page=8 inches; 8 x 129,423/12/5280=miles necessaryActive Image to cover pages read 16 miles. So Mr. Boshnack had a kick off chapel on October 8 around 8:00. Mr. Boshnack, Miss Richardson, Mrs. Eckert and Mrs. Shea were in the first group of teachers to ride around the gymnasium and right out the door for a bike ride from NCA along the canal to Spencerport. This ride was 18 miles. When the first group got back, the next group of teachers made the ride as well. This group consisted of Mr. Boshnack, Mrs. Yaussy, Mr. Yaussy and Mrs. Porpiglia. Yes Mr. Boshnack rode twice!!!!!!! It took each group about 1 ½ hours to complete this ride. Good job everyone. Special thanks to all those businesses that have supported the Summer Reading Program with freebies and Mr. Potter for taking pictures during the first group ride.
Next year we will be exploring new ideas for the Summer Reading Program. Have a great year of Reading!
